Plan mode with Tab is why I stopped pasting diffs into Slack. I still wish the first Windows launch did not argue with Defender.

What is OpenCode?
OpenCode is an open source agent that helps you write code in your terminal, IDE, or desktop. You can run it as a terminal interface, a desktop app, or an IDE extension.
From the product page
These names come from the OpenCode homepage, not a marketing rewrite. The full breakdown lives on the features page.
Open the feature list/share when you need a reference or a debug trail. Sessions are not shared by default. How people actually run it
Run /init so OpenCode writes an AGENTS.md in the repo root. The docs ask you to commit it so the next session, and the next teammate, get the same structure and conventions.
Press Tab to switch to Plan. File edits and shell commands default to ask or deny in that mode. When the steps look right, Tab back to Build and tell it to make the change.
Use @ to fuzzy-find a path. A typical prompt from the intro docs: ask how authentication is handled in a named file, then reuse that pattern on a second route.
/undo reverts the last user message and the file changes that followed. It needs Git. /redo puts the turn back. You can undo more than once.
Desktop organizes active sessions with tabs. That is the current desktop headline on the official download page: one window, several agents, same project.
Same category, different contract
Criteria below are things the official site or public 2026 comparisons actually name. This is not a scorecard.
| Criterion | OpenCode | Claude Code | Cursor | GitHub Copilot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| License | MIT, public source | Not MIT open source | Proprietary IDE | Proprietary extension |
| Where it runs | TUI, desktop, IDE extension | Terminal CLI | VS Code fork | IDE extension |
| Models | 75+ providers via Models.dev, plus local | Claude family | Curated multi-model list | Copilot / OpenAI family |
| LSP | Native, auto-loaded for the LLM | No native LSP layer | Through the editor | Through the editor |
| Parallel work | Multiple sessions on one project | Background agents | Limited parallel sessions | Limited to the IDE chat |
| Existing subscriptions | Copilot, ChatGPT Plus/Pro, Claude Pro/Max | Anthropic plans | Cursor plan plus BYOK | Copilot plan |
The homepage states OpenCode does not store your code or context data, so it can run in privacy-sensitive environments. The same FAQ is more precise: data is stored when you use the included free models or when you create a shareable link.
The project is MIT licensed. The homepage cites over 195,000 GitHub stars, 950 contributors, over 13,000 commits, and more than 16 million developers each month.
CLI and desktop builds have been code-signed since v1.3.4. Windows Defender, Kaspersky, and Smart App Control have still flagged unsigned temp DLLs on older npm installs. Check the SHA256 on the download page and read the trust notes.
From people who already hit the sharp edges
Plan mode with Tab is why I stopped pasting diffs into Slack. I still wish the first Windows launch did not argue with Defender.
Marta · Windows 11 · TUI
I log in with GitHub Copilot and let LSP load TypeScript. Refactors land closer to the type checker than they did when I only pasted files into a chat window.
Kenji · desktop + VS Code extension
Docs say WSL is the better Windows path. I run opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096 in Ubuntu and point Desktop at localhost. Native PowerShell works, but a large repo felt slower there.
Rafael · WSL2 + Desktop
Zen is fine for a first pass. I switch to ChatGPT Pro through /connect for harder refactors. The model picker is long. That is the trade for 75+ providers.
Priya · OpenCode Zen + OpenAI login
/undo pulled back a sloppy apply_patch. It needs Git, which the docs say, and I wish the TUI said that louder the first time.
Owen · git repo, Plan then Build

Short answers
OpenCode is an open source agent that helps you write and run code with any AI model. It is available as a terminal interface, a desktop app, or an IDE extension.
Not necessarily. OpenCode includes free models you can use without creating an account. You can also connect OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and others, or run local models. Zen is the optional curated list.
OpenCode itself is free to use and ships free models. Connecting another provider can add that provider's charges.
No. Desktop is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and there is an IDE extension. The download page still leads with the terminal installers because that is how most people start.
Windows users have reported Defender Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.H!ml and Kaspersky PDM:Trojan.Win32.Generic on unsigned temp files. Maintainers signed CLI and desktop from v1.3.4. See the antivirus guide.
Desktop Windows x64 is 120 MB. CLI zip is 57.9 MB. Buttons on the next page are labeled by platform.
